| Have you ever... |

This week's activity for the 9th graders (3rd year students) is using the present perfect tense to ask about experience - aka, "Have you ever slept in a tent?" "Yes, I have."
Did this with 3 out of 5 classes so far; it's the most success I've had with that one particular 9th grade class that I've been having trouble with, so that's nice. The kids were also impressed that I have eaten snake (in Taiwan) and that I have met a famous person (Jackie Chan). So far no one else has eaten snake (or admits it), although quite a few have met famous people -- usually Japanese TV celebrities or athletes. And a few claimed that they have seen a ghost. I didn't get to quiz them on that, though.
Next week, there's a conference in Tokyo for recontracting JETs. Monday June 5 to Wednesday June 7; back to school on Thursday the 8th. I just started reading about it; they gave us money to buy our own shinkansen (bullet train) tickets, and I got a FAX today confirming my hotel reservation. Some of the JETs from Nagoya are heading up for the weekend, and some are just going there on Monday.
I haven't decided when exactly I'll head to Tokyo; I was just there a few weeks ago, and my friend Andrew said he wasn't going to be around for the weekend. I have a previous engagement on Saturday afternoon, too, although I guess I could reschedule that. A different friend of mine from California said he will be in Tokyo from Sunday night, need to work out details.
Because of the conference, I'm missing 3 days of classes. Then the following week, the 9th graders are taking their school trip to Tokyo: leaving Monday June 12, coming back Thursday June 15. And on Tuesday June 13, the 7th graders are heading to Little World for a field trip, so the only classes that day will be 8th grade classes.
I have one 8th grade class scheduled on Tuesdays, but the teacher I have the class with will be off at Little World (she's a 7th grade homeroom teacher), so I told her I will probably have trouble leading the class by myself. Still working that little problem out, I think. I wonder if I can swing going on the field trip with the 7th graders. |
